As Aglantis Managing Director Luke Malan explains, “Beyond that, it’s more time to focus on higher-value farm tasks, fewer trips between farms and irrigation assets, reduced fuel costs and improved irrigation scheduling.”

When monitoring gives growers’ confidence that irrigation is running correctly (and flags issues immediately), it reduces the need for constant physical checking. That translates into fewer kilometres on the road, fewer wasted hours, and more time where it matters most — on the tasks that improve farm performance, maintain crop consistency, and strengthen day-to-day decision-making. Luke puts it simply: “Farmers are practical people.” They want solutions that remove friction from daily operations, not add to it.
Opportunity
At the same time, the economics of irrigation are changing. Energy has become a sharper pressure point for irrigated agriculture, and producers are increasingly using monitoring not just to understand water flow and scheduling, but to make sense of energy use and equipment performance. Luke frames the challenge clearly: “Energy costs are rising. How are producers using irrigation monitoring to understand energy use and make changes that reduce costs or improve pump performance? ” The answer lies in turning visibility into action and that’s where automation becomes more than convenience.

Those operational changes might be adjustments to run times, sequencing, or the way irrigation is broken into sets the kind of improvements that can deliver meaningful savings but are hard to sustain when they add complexity to already stretched days.
In the Greater Whitsunday and across North Queensland, the operating context makes reliability non-negotiable. As Luke outlines, “In North Queensland and the Greater Whitsunday region, growers are often managing multiple farms and irrigation assets spread over large distances.” Those distances sit alongside the realities of disruption and constraint: “Add in power outages, weather events, peak workload periods and labour shortages, and reliability becomes critical.” When growers are busy elsewhere, the technology needs to keep doing its job and it needs to speak up when something goes wrong. “Growers need systems that continue operating when they’re busy elsewhere and provide immediate alerts when something isn’t right,” Luke noted.
Even with strong benefits, many growers still take a measured approach before trialling something new. What typically moves them from interest to action isn’t a product pitch it’s proof.
“The biggest driver is seeing it working on a farm similar to their own,” Luke explains.
Once a grower can see the technology operating under real conditions and recognise it would work in their own layout, the decision becomes easier. “Once they can see the technology operating in the real world and realise it would work on their own farm, the conversation changes very quickly.”
That’s why paddock-based demonstrations are such a powerful part of building confidence and practical adoption.
Luke is honest about what doesn’t work.
“Farmers don’t adopt technology because of a brochure or a PowerPoint presentation.” Instead, trust is built through reality seeing it working, asking questions on the spot, and hearing directly from someone who has already made the shift.
“They adopt it when they can see it working in a real paddock, on a real farm, and speak directly with another grower who is using it,” Luke says. “That’s where confidence is built and adoption happens.”
Results
Luke points to a practical example: “Andrew Castelanelli, for example, was able to halve the size of some irrigation sets.”
Under manual systems, that can mean extra switching, extra checking, and more time spent travelling. But with automation, the labour barrier drops away. “With automation there was no increase in labour requirements, yet he achieved approximately 30% savings in both water use and electricity consumption,” Luke said.
